Abja linavabrik (Abja Linen Factory)

Abja linavabrik

Based on archival sources, this book tells the story of the linen factory established in Abja-Vanamõisa in 1913. The idea for the factory originated while Mats Kissa was studying at the Riga Polytechnic Institute. Inspired by his vision, other enterprising local people joined the project, and his idea became reality.

Using a hot-water retting process and becoming the first factory of its kind in the Russian Empire, the Abja Linen Factory quickly developed into the largest employer in the Abja and Halliste region. Apart from minor modifications, the factory continued to operate with essentially the same technology until the end of its existence.

Who were the people and organisations associated with the factory? What led to the bankruptcy of this successful enterprise? What became of its founder and long-time managing director Mats Kissa, as well as the other shareholders, after 1940?

This book seeks to answer these questions and provide readers with a reliable account of the history of this remarkable enterprise.

Elva algkool 1913-1940. Dokumendikogumik (Elva Primary School 1913–1940. A Collection of Documents)

Elva algkool 1913-1940. Dokumendikogumik.

The aim of this documentary collection is to publish historical documents relating to Elva Primary School between 1913 and 1940. The sources originate from the collections of the Estonian Historical Archives, the Estonian National Archives, the Estonian History Museum, Elva Gymnasium, and the extensive private archive of Katrin Labotkin, granddaughter of the school’s long-serving headmaster Johannes Lang.

As Elva Primary School was a typical school of its time, its documents provide a valuable insight into everyday school life in early twentieth-century Estonia. The collection therefore contributes both to the history of Elva Primary School and to a broader understanding of elementary education in Estonia.

The publication consists of three parts in four volumes. The first part is based on the personal school diary of headmaster Johannes Lang, offering a detailed account of school life up to 1940. The second part contains the minutes of the pedagogical council from 1928 to 1940, documenting educational reforms, daily concerns, and changing political circumstances. Because the minutes include extensive pupil lists and promotion records, this section is of particular interest to family historians and genealogists.

The third part covers the events leading to the school’s establishment from 1906 onwards, the planning and construction of the school building completed in 1924, and numerous biographical accounts of teachers and notable figures connected with the school.

What makes this collection especially valuable is the publication of Johannes Lang’s personal school diary, a type of source that has rarely survived and even more rarely been made available to the public.

Koguduse ja Elva kiriku teenistust tahan surmani jätkata (I Wish to Continue Serving the Congregation and the Church of Elva Until My Death)

Koguduse ja Elva kiriku teenistust tahan surmani jätkata

The central part of this book is the remarkable autobiography of Jaan Kompus, written in his own hand and supplemented throughout his life into old age. As a parish clerk, organist, teacher, community leader, and one of the founders of the Elva congregation, Kompus played an important role in the educational, cultural, and social life of southern Estonia.

Born during the Estonian National Awakening, Jaan Kompus belonged to a generation that helped shape Estonian national identity and cultural life. He worked as a teacher, parish clerk, school headmaster, and organiser of numerous civic initiatives. He also played a leading role in the establishment of the borough of Elva and in the construction of the Elva church.

His memoirs provide a unique first-hand account of Estonian society from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. The book offers valuable insights into education, church life, local government, and community organisations during a formative period in Estonian history.

Tartu linn kaartidel 18. sajandi teisest poolest kuni 19. sajandi esimese veerandini (Tartu on Maps from the Second Half of the Eighteenth Century to the First Quarter of the Nineteenth Century)

Tartu linn kaartidel 18. sajandi teisest poolest kuni 19. sajandi esimese veerandini

This cartographic catalogue illustrates the transformation of Tartu from a war-ravaged Hanseatic town into a university city. The period from the second half of the eighteenth century to the first quarter of the nineteenth century marked a turning point in the city’s history, as Tartu emerged from the devastation of the Great Northern War and developed into the intellectual centre often known as the “Athens of the Emajõgi”.

The volume contains 83 historical maps and plans, providing researchers, local historians, and anyone interested in urban development with a valuable tool for studying the evolution of Tartu’s cityscape.

Junghans Meister. Kadunud ilusad asjad - Junghans Meister. Die schönen Sachen, die wir verloren haben

This bilingual Estonian-German publication presents the life and work of Anton Ziegler (1901–1997), the creator and long-time designer of the Meister series for the Junghans watch company, as remembered by his son, Dr Volker Ziegler.

Narva politsei aastatel 1918-1940 (The Narva Police, 1918–1940)

Narva politsei aastatel 1918-1940

Richly illustrated with historical photographs, this study examines the history of the Narva Police during the interwar period. Narva was a particularly challenging region in which to build the institutions of the newly independent Estonian state. Shortages of personnel and resources, competing political interests, and the broader upheavals of the era created constant challenges for the police force.

The book explores not only policing but also the social life of police officers, leisure activities in Narva-Jõesuu, and the biographies of the region’s police chiefs. It provides a detailed portrait of everyday life in Narva and offers a broader perspective on society during Estonia’s first period of independence.

Elva Tarbijate Ühistu 1921-2021 (Elva Consumers’ Cooperative 1921–2021)

Elva Tarbijate Ühistu 1921-2021

The modern Elva Consumers’ Cooperative is the result of a century-long development that began with the founding of the Elva Economic Association in December 1921. This book traces the organisation’s journey through periods of growth, political upheaval, war, occupation, and economic transformation.

Originally established by local farmers, the cooperative purchased agricultural produce and supplied rural communities with everyday necessities. Over the decades, it adapted to changing political systems and economic realities, surviving both Soviet nationalisation and wartime disruptions.

The book provides an overview of the cooperative’s development over one hundred years and offers a broader perspective on the history of trade, consumer cooperation, and everyday life in southern Estonia.
